educational philosophies

We believe that the emergent curriculum provides the best opportunities to ensure we are helping your child reach their learning goals. Other philosophies that are intertwined in our curriculum provision include Magda Gerber, Montessori, Community/Place-Based Learning, and The Early Learning Framework. Each program will also be reflective of the group dynamics and the individuality of the educators working with the children.

INFANT TODDLER PROGRAMMING focuses on children looking forward to being left in the care of trusted educators, a sense of belonging in the program and centre, and confidence to explore and make connections.

STEPPING STONES PROGRAMMING allows for the rising two-year-olds to deepen their exploration of their world utilizing their improved language skills, newly found confidence and independence.

3-5 PROGRAMS with the increased group size, offer greater interaction diversity, relationship building, skills development and community engagement. Growing independence, self-help, conflict resolution, cooperation, collaboration, enthusiasm for learning, confidence, empathy and a sense of community are all skills that ensure your child is ready for the social, emotional and academic challenges of elementary education.

KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMMING offers children a welcome chance to return to the freedom of play after a challenging day of formal education.

SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMMING provides care and recreational pursuits during out of school hours. Focusing on community spirit and insisting on respect and inclusion as the foundation from which activities and life-skills are introduced to the children.

A day spent at any licensed group childcare setting is a busy day for every child. Learning opportunities are intrinsically provided through group management and daily routines. It is our goal to provide an inclusive environment where children have a sense of belonging, learn through play, have fun, and experience awe and wonder. We recognize that every child is different, and our experience has taught us that some children thrive in this type of environment, while others struggle with the hustle and bustle of large groups and the level of stimulus created. We make every effort to counter these challenges with solid routines, small group transitions, low stimulus décor, natural resources, and plenty of outside time. However, if your child thrives in a low-stimulus environment, where they have control over their day, they may struggle in a group setting and prefer a smaller, in-home setting. This is no reflection on quality of care, it is seeing the child for their authentic self and providing the best environment for their character and needs. We do the child an injustice by insisting they attend a facility that proves to be a daily struggle. We will always give children every support we can because we want them to thrive in our care. We utilize all our strategies, borne of years of experience and training, and when our efforts are not enough, we seek the help of community professionals, to assist parents in accessing services that meet the needs of their child. Supports can include referrals, consultation, and development of an individual care plan (ICP), staff training, and additional staffing. Despite our efforts there are occasions when we must make the difficult decision to cease care provision. Please consider if Maven Lane is the right setting for your child. As their guardian, you are best placed to choose their most appropriate care provision.

daily routines

The children can rely on a general framing of their day. Age-appropriate routines will include, but are not limited to:

  • free play with resources that support learning outcomes
  • morning snack
  • outside time
  • family-style lunch
  • rest time
  • free play (outside or inside)

Our part-time programs also enjoy a snack and outside time. All our programs arrange curriculum relevant field trips throughout the month, either by foot, public transport or Maven Lane transport.

Hours of operation vary by location; children should be in attendance no longer than 9 hours per day.

best practices

Our policies are designed to incorporate ideas that we feel are best practices in our field:

  • outside play every day, regardless of weather (weather warnings are heeded)
  • extended outside time whenever possible
  • clothing must support your child’s growing independence and be suitable for messy play
  • sickness policy is strictly adhered to
  • in the case of differing opinions on child care provision, our Code of Ethics will guide our policy
  • support services are sought for children who struggle to thrive in the environment
  • educators are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of professional development each year
  • any fee reduction initiatives that our parents are eligible for will be provided

community spirit

It takes a village to raise a child and our village values its community spirit. Some of our locations are very large, but our warm and friendly hallways evidence our welcoming culture. Even our babies enjoy the hustle and bustle of a busy hallway because they know they are respected and belong there. We endeavor to build our sense of community by engaging with parents, staff, and various groups and activities within the community.

PARENT PARTICIPATION

An opportunity for parents to share their cultures, skills, workplace and/or time as part of being active members of the community.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

  • invitation for community groups to join us with information programs, entertainment displays and generally sharing great ideas with the children
  • intergenerational programming to bring children and seniors together
  • participating in community events to help instill the children’s sense of belonging in the wider community, and the responsibilities thereof

CENTRE WIDE SPIRIT DAYS

Examples of celebration days that we may host at our centres during the year

  • crazy hair days
  • summer celebration
  • pizza days
  • pj day
  • freezie day
  • mud day
  • welcome breakfast
  • family bbq

Programs often have their own spirit days, and spontaneous dance parties are a regular event in our hallways! Families are always welcome to offer their celebration ideas.

transportation

We are proud to have a modest fleet of vehicles for the transportation of children. These vehicles allow us to provide school aged bussing, as well as take our programming into the community extending past the reach of public transportation routes. To be able to provide experiential context and extend children’s understanding of their world is a pleasure and privilege that brings great rewards.

Our transportation service, both equipment and practices, has been inspected and is in keeping with the National Safety Code, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Whenever possible, our qualified drivers also have certificates in child care so we can be sure the care provided under their supervision is in keeping with Maven Lane standards. An important part of the children’s safety is their understanding of their responsibilities as passengers. Strict adherence to the rules makes it possible for the drivers to add a little fun into the journey. Maven Lane provides car seats for children as legislated, thus providing the full service!

The timing and logistics of school transportation are intricate. Maven Lane endeavors to provide transportation to and from as many elementary schools as possible; unfortunately at this time, not every school can be accommodated. Transportation is provided on all in-service days (including early dismissal days). Below is a list of currently serviced schools:
